OUR APPROACH

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY-LED CHANGE

what is sclc?

Supporting Community-Led Change, or SCLC, is our approach to working with local groups in Haiti that we have refined over the course of more than twenty years.

SCLC borrows elements from Community-Led Development (Movement for Community-led Development), Supporting Community-Led Response (Local to Global Protection), and Konbit (Gwoup Konbit), and incorporates feedback from our local partners and research done by the Share Trust, ALNAP, and others.

What makes SCLC different?

CONVENTIONAL AID...

Restricts to specific sectors (education, health, water, etc).
Designs and directly implements projects.
Treats humanitarian aid, long-term development, and peacebuilding (the “triple nexus”) as separate.
Takes large percentages for overhead.
Restricts grants to just direct project expenses.
Chases grant funding.

Supporting Community-Led Change (SCLC)...

Supports what communities want for themselves.
Supports and strengthens local leaders, organizations, and networks.
Operates at the center of the Triple Nexus, shifting as communities’ needs change.
Builds long-term partnerships with Haitian organizations that share our values.
Provides unrestricted funds so that resources go toward the most important priorities.
Does not accept funding that would compromise our core principles.

Help us fight for aid that is more sustainable and respectful.
