Internships with Roots of Development

Overview
Roots of Development, a Washington-DC based 501(c)(3) organization committed to supporting and practicing Development Without Dependency, hires part-time interns for Spring, Fall and Summer. The role is mostly remote (95-100%), with some responsibilities possibly requiring meetings or other activities in the Washington, DC, area. Compensation in the form of a stipend is available.
Background
Roots of Development’s mission is to support and promote a community-driven approach to development—an approach that is based on strengthening local capacity in order to improve the quality of life in marginalized communities. We partner with local, community-based organizations that are sustainably improving quality of life in their communities by investing in local capacity and supporting community-led development initiatives.
Roots of Development’s intern will be part of our small team of committed, dedicated individuals and will gain experience in nonprofit management, donor relations, event planning, research, communications, fundraising, writing, and more.
Role Responsibilities
Interns work under the supervision of the Strategic Initiatives & Communications Director.
Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with the planning, preparation, and execution of fundraising events
- Working to secure corporate or foundation support for organizational priorities
- Authoring articles and/or research papers for the Development without Dependency Knowledge Hub
- Contributing to social media content
- Administrative tasks
Internships are what the intern makes of it. Depending on the number of hours they’re able to commit and their skills, their responsibilities can expand to include what they’re experienced or interested in. If so inclined, the intern could be involved in: communications, fundraising, research, writing, graphic design, strategy creation, etc.
Requirements and Application
Required:
- Current undergraduate or graduate students
- Committed to sustainable, community-led development
- Independent, self-driven work style
- Strong writing and research skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Experience working with other cultures
- Fluent in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
Preferred:
- Experience working in nonprofits or international development
- Degree in or studying international relations, international development, or related field
- Proficiency in Haitian Creole a plus
- Experience with Salesforce or other CRM
- Located primarily in Washington, DC
